Skip App was an instant photo-sharing app that simplified distributing photos to friends and reimagined the core idea of taking and capturing moments. The company had received funding from several angel investors and was located in Berlin and San Francisco.
Since I was more than a lead designer for Skip, the following text explains Skip’s core functionality and vision. Skip was the catalyst for my entrepreneurial and design career.
Like never before, technology uniquely enables us to share our everyday life. Sharing means celebrating those special, unique moments. Moments, which are supposed to be a vivid, vibrant testament of our lives.
But in reality, these moments are mere imitations of the real thing. And more often than not, we share them with strangers.
Here we are, absorbing the daily impressions of our dozens, if not hundreds of “friends”. At Skip, we call these platforms the “social media jungle”. They are a hot mess of unauthentic and increasingly inflationary collections of supposedly “real” moments.
At Skip, we had the bold vision beyond what conventional social networks had to offer. Thus we are happy to present to you the most authentic, yet effortless way to capture and share the moments most important to you. As a pleasant side-effect we have created, what we believe, is the first true social network.
So, in proper McKinsey fashion, here is how it works in 3 simple steps:
Yes, you read that right. Put away that phone.
Instead, do what you already do! Be in the moment–let the madness unfold. Hit Aspen’s slopes for a weekend trip, rave at a Flume concert, or head to Paris for some freshly baked croissants and the best espresso on the planet.
A moment worth capturing pops up? Boot Skip, snap a photo… and you’re done. But wait, there’s more!
What just happened? Well, you just took a picture. Easy enough. But in the Skip-universe that’s only half of the story.
With a simple swipe, you auto-magically shared it with all of the Skip-friends you just spent the moment with! No internet connection, separate WhatsApp group, or SnapCrap checkbox-hunt required.
One more time for the people in the back:
1. Take a picture of a mesmerizing moment.
2. Swipe to share
3. The mates you are currently hanging out with get the picture as well. Easy as raspberry pie.
Kind of cool, we know.
So you’re done with that croissant? Good. Get those crumbs off your sweater and head home.
Had your phone in your backpack during the whole trip without taking out the phone a single time? Worry not. Your attentive Skip-friends might have immortalised your adventures for you.
By accessing the “Sky” you can easily review and save the photos your Skip-friends took while you were busy nibbling on your croissant. Neat!
And this is it. The whole Skip-erience. Not a minute wasted with all of the goodness on your and your friend’s phones.
We’ve been working on Skip for the last few months and are happy to announce that Skip is now available to everyone in the AppStore.
Give it a spin today and let us know what you think.
Many thanks, naturally, to all of the amazing people out there who already contributed to make the Skip-dream a reality. And thanks to you for helping us make the next step on what has been an incredible journey already.
